Flooring is Key to a Home Improvement Kitchen Project

Redoing a kitchen is a major undertaking, and it's hard to figure out where to start. Should you ass new appliances? Repaint the cabinets, or should you install new counters?

How about starting from the bottom up! Flooring is a good beginning point when developing a home improvement kitchen project. It's important for the flooring material to match other elements of the kitchen, like the cabinets and counter tops, but don't forget that it needs to be durable and easy to maintain. An overview of some of the available floor types will help you plan your home improvement kitchen project.

Vinyl

Vinyl is easy on your feet and on your wallet, and cleaning up spills on vinyl is a cinch. This material can come in a variety of colors to match your home improvement kitchen color plan. However, vinyl does have a tendency to peel and isn't as durable as other kitchen flooring materials.

Linoleum

Linoleum is also easy on your feet, and it is stain-resistant although it is not very durable. It also does not come in many color varieties, which might be a problem when you're formulating your home improvement kitchen color scheme.

Stone

Stone has a very appealing, natural look and is good for radiant heat. However, it is not very comfortable on the feet for long-term cooking duties. Stone does need special sealants to prevent stains but is very durable, and stone surfaces can get slippery. One popular home improvement kitchen idea decorators have developed is extending stone flooring outside of the kitchen to create a big, open room feeling.

Wood

Wood is also hard on the feet but provides an all-natural look to the cooking area. This material needs a special coating to prevent stains and is susceptible to damage from water and humidity. Wood is durable, which should be an important concern when coming up with home improvement kitchen flooring ideas. A current flooring trend is the use of exotic, dark woods, like mahogany and cherry.

Carpet

Carpet is the No. 1 easiest material on your feet but other factors might outweigh picking it for a kitchen floor surface. Carpet is susceptible to staining and is not very durable. It can be a chore to clean.

There are several other types of flooring available for home improvement kitchen projects, and it is important you investigate the advantages and disadvantages of each kind. Flooring is something that can bring the whole design scheme of a kitchen together, but it also must be functional and comfortable.
